In Eugene Terry’s debut children’s publication, Tuesday, we follow Duck’s journey to a big city, in search of a snack. With delicate colored pencil illustrations rendered in subtle tones, Terry tells a simple story of adventure and friendship. The direct writing is paired with intricate imagery in which details are revealed with every read: an alligator peeking its head out of a sewer grate; the price of a Swiss cheese sandwich at the deli; a man watching television through an apartment building’s window.
Praise for Tuesday:
“A boat that is a flower pot that is a hat. A city that is a sparkling graffitied kingdom rising up from cotton-candy waters. And the deli: an oasis. This is Duck's world, and he has all the magic he needs to cross rivers, fly above car horns, evade tongue-thrashing rats, and see all the city's sludge as purely delicious. Eugene Terry's illustrations are an open-invitation delight, a bodega cat's dream, and a love note for New Yorkers. Tuesday is drawn with such intimacy that the pages vibrate. It reads like jumping on clouds, and the story lingered around me after, like swirling smoke.” – Joana Avillez, Illustrator and Author
“This book was a great teaching tool for my class. The simple text created so much space for my students to use their imaginations to explore the detailed illustrations. We have read the book plenty of times during circle, but the best part is watching them read it to each other!” – Jasmin Flores, Early Childhood Educator, Consultant, and Writer
